Laser Hair Removal

Smooth, lasting results, tailored to your skin and hair type.

Duration · 30 minutesConsultation first

A small area such as the upper lip takes only a few minutes; the appointment is held longer to allow for assessment and aftercare.

Treatment settings are selected for the area, hair, and skin in front of us, with cooling and careful overlap for consistent coverage.

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair itself, which means it only acts on hairs that are actively growing. That is why it takes a course rather than a session: at any moment only a fraction of the follicles in an area are in the growth phase, and the rest have to be caught on later visits.

01

What it does

  • Progressively thinner, sparser regrowth over a course

  • No ingrown hairs or razor burn between sessions

  • Treats a small area in minutes rather than a full appointment

  • Settings chosen for your skin tone rather than a fixed protocol

Prices vary by the size of the area treated. Several sessions are needed for lasting hair reduction, which is why courses are priced below the single-session rate. Member pricing applies to active members. Prices are subject to change.

What to expect

  1. Skin and hair assessment

Your skin is graded on the Fitzpatrick scale and your hair colour and coarseness noted. Both matter: the laser targets pigment, so dark hair on lighter skin responds best, and grey, red, or very fine blonde hair may not respond at all.

  2. Patch test

A small test area is treated and reviewed before a full session, particularly for a first treatment or a deeper skin tone.

  3. Treatment

The area is shaved if needed — the laser works on the follicle beneath the skin, not the hair above it. Protective eyewear is worn and the handpiece passed over the area; each pulse feels like a warm rubber band snap.

  4. Aftercare

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen on any exposed treated area. Avoid heat, saunas, and strenuous exercise for 48 hours. Do not wax, pluck, or thread between sessions — removing the root removes the target. Shaving is fine.

04

Is it right for you?

Good for

  • Upper lip and sideburns
  • Underarms
  • Beard area, including shaping
  • Dark hair on light to medium skin
  • Skin that reacts badly to shaving or waxing

Not suitable if

  • Grey, white, red, or very fine blonde hair, which carries too little pigment for the laser to target. This is a limit of the technology rather than a precaution — electrolysis is the alternative worth asking about
  • Recently tanned skin, including self-tanner, within the past two to four weeks
  • Photosensitising medication, including some antibiotics and isotretinoin
  • Pregnancy
  • Active infection, open wounds, cold sores, or inflammation in the treatment area
  • A history of keloid scarring in the area to be treated

Downtime

Redness and small raised bumps around each follicle for a few hours, occasionally up to a day — this looks like goosebumps and is the expected response. Shaving is fine as soon as the redness settles.

Results

Treated hairs shed over one to three weeks, which can look like regrowth but is not. Because only hairs in the growth phase respond, lasting reduction takes six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with maintenance afterwards.

Common questions

How many sessions will I need?

Six to eight for lasting reduction, spaced four to six weeks apart. The laser only affects hairs in their growth phase, and at any given moment that is roughly a fifth to a third of the follicles in an area — so the course exists to catch the rest as they cycle in, not to sell you more visits.

Is it permanent?

It is permanent reduction, not permanent removal, and the distinction is worth knowing before you book. A completed course leaves far fewer hairs and the ones that remain are finer and lighter, but hormones and ageing can activate dormant follicles later, so most people come back for occasional maintenance. Anyone promising permanent removal is overselling it.

Does it work on Asian or darker skin?

Often yes, but the settings and sometimes the wavelength have to change, which is what the assessment is for. The laser targets pigment, so the more melanin the surrounding skin holds, the more care is needed to treat the follicle without heating the skin itself. We patch test first, and if your skin and hair combination is not one that can be treated safely we will tell you rather than treat you conservatively and charge you for a course that cannot work.

Should I shave before my appointment?

Yes — shave the area the day before or the morning of. The laser works on the follicle beneath the skin, and hair left above the surface absorbs energy where it does no good and can cause a surface burn. Do not wax, pluck, or thread for four weeks beforehand: those remove the root, which is the target.

Does it hurt?

Each pulse feels like a warm rubber band snap. The upper lip and the beard area are the more sensitive spots because the skin is thin and the hair coarse; the underarm is usually easy. Sessions on small areas are over in a few minutes, which is most of why it is tolerable.

Can I have laser hair removal in summer?

Yes, if the area stays out of the sun. A tan — including self-tanner — makes treatment unsafe rather than merely less effective, because tanned skin competes with the follicle for the laser's energy. Underarms are easy to keep covered; an upper lip in July takes real discipline with sunscreen.
